Towards a better future...

A developed India is every Indian's dream. But we never see administrators take concerted action on the top few problems which when addressed will go a long way in acheiving this goal.

I believe there are two key challenges where even concerted action can make a huge difference.

This is a paradox of sorts. There is a huge demand across the country for skilled workforce for many sectors. We need many many more skilled electricians, plumbers, construction workers, IT personnel etc., On the other hand, there is a significant section of population who are either unemployed / unemployable or so under-employed that they struggle to get two square meals a day.

Many industrialists point out that the problem in India is not population per-se, but unemployable population and un-skilled or under-skilled labour. That is why we need a nation wide skills development and employment initiative. This initiative should equip people with such skills free of cost and connect them with areas where there are requirements for such skills. This will go a long way into reducing our BPL (Below Poverty Line) population rather than giving them doles. Giving out doles without skills development will only keep people in perpetual poverty.

Despite many eminent people including our economist Prime Minister knowing this, there has been little to no concerted action on this front across the years.

Apart from skills development, one other major challenge is equitable development. Most of our states have only one or two cities which can be called "cities" in mordern parlance. We can't seriously hope to have a developed India until we have many more cities in states we can really call "cities". Unless there are more cities, employable population tries to migrate and get concentrated in the couple of cities available, which causes huge problems.

If you look at the Telengana issue, one of the major question is what to do with Hyderabad? This wouldn't have been so difficult if we had other cities in coastal andhra which were developed to a comparable extent as Hyderabad developed. Even now, rather than seeing this as an opportunity to ensure more development across other under developed areas, we only see the congress and other parties crying for united andhra playing politics with it.

Some would say it is futile to expect this from our political class which is only interested in minting more money. But atleast, if we voters realize these are imporant and vote accordingly, it will make a difference. Nitish Kumar's Bihar and Narendra Modi's Gujarat are examples.

  1. The main problem in our country is our education system. If you spoil that nothing can go right. But fortunately there are some private schools which are good enough. So we have some good skilled resources. Your point is also valid, however i feel we need to start from education then correct these anomalies in the system.
