If I used to like certain periods in my school, the "moral science" is one among them - not that I hated the others, but this is of those you really look forward to. That's where you get to listen to many nice stories and learn nice morals as well. And of course, its one of those subjects you can hope to pass easily.

At that age, I am not sure if I realized its importance. But since I was fond of stories anyway, the stories along with their morals got into me. When my parents, grand parents and well-wishers emphasized many of those values through many other anecdotes, I had a good moral foundation from childhood.

When I see the various problems and scams in the society today, I think again and again, have we totally forgotten moral education? You can learn everything else from schools and colleges, but morals is something that you'll have to learn primarily from parents, with schools and other well wishers lending a helping hand.

Many parents are so focused on their child becoming a doctor, engineer or an entrepreneur and groom them for the same. But they don't really pay attention to the moral education and well being of the child, apart from its physical well being. The result? The child might become a doctor later, but as he doesn't really have a sound moral foundation, he learns most of those from his interactions with the society. If it is good, his morals are good, and if it's bad he becomes one of those doctors who become a bane to the society later.

It's not so much about Ramalinga Raju siphoning of Rs. 5000 cr, but look at the way he went off leaving his company behind. Did he even think of the condition of his 53000 employees? Where does this insensitivity come from?

And its not even just Raju. There have been umpteen people before who have managed to siphon off so much money causing harm to many people, only to spend them on court cases and on treatment for serious ailments and personal issues later.

Raju is just a symptom. The deeper malaise has to be attacked at the individual level. That none of your actions should harm your fellow humans and you shouldn't be earning out of harming someone is something that should be inculcated from childhood. It is part of the moral education that a child has to receive from his parents / schools / well wishers.

Moral education in schools also have to be given priority along with other subjects. Parents also should realize that well being of their child includes not just physical, but as well as moral well being. Let's hope, as we always do, that these incidents help the society learn the right lessons and we turn out as a much better society than we are now!

  1. Yes, as you say, moral education could help. But these type of ppl will anyway be there irrespective of the amount of moral values you inculcate in them. I feel the stick approach would work here. Punish the guilty very severely so that others do not feel like doing that mistake again. A bit of moral education along with strict punishment for crimes could help prevent crimes to some extent.
